Some Common Medical Myths that are Wrong

There are differences in how people address the various health conditions they come up with. What people have learned to believe from family traditions, religious beliefs, superstition, to name a few, determines how they shall address these ailments. These things may keep them away from getting proper medical attention. There are some myths that need to be demystified so that people can view their situations objectively and realistically.
One of them is the idea that you have to wait for half an hour after eating before you can swim. It was believed that if you did not wait, you would induce some severe cramping. Cramping in such cases is due to dehydration, not digestion. Cramping is common in those who undertake intense physical activity on a full stomach. The truth is you can have a light meal r snack and then swim as you please.
There was also the belief that swallowed chewing gum lodged in the system for a week. It makes sense to throw out chewing gum when you no longer wish to chew. If food stays for more than two days in your stomach; you will suffer constipation. Chewing gum cannot do this since it shall be digested out. Those who end up feeling constipated need to seek medical intervention, as it is not the chewing gum.
Some believe frogs and toads give people warts. This was what older siblings used to scare others. They said that the bumps on their skin were the source. Those bumps are in fact glands they use to protect against enemies. Their secretions are not responsible for warts forming. Since frogs and toads live in dirt, you shall most likely contract a bacterial infection if you touch them, not warts.
Some people believe that by shaving, their hair would grow thicker and faster. On the contrary, hair growth remains the same. When air is short, it shall be rough, which people think is thicker.
There was also the instruction not to allow a concussed patient to fall asleep. It is believed that the person shall slip into a coma. They assume they will go into a coma. Sleeping, on the other hand, shall help the person heal. You therefore need to let them sleep. You only need to make sure a doctor assess their condition, to rule out a swelling or internal bleeding case.
There was also the belief of feeding a cold and starving a fever. These conditions cause dehydration in the body. By limiting food and drinks, you only make things worse. The best thing would be to give food and water for strength and nourishment.
Make a habit of asking for medical attention whenever you feel off. Always rule out such possibilities with the help of a medical professional whenever you feel something is not right. You may also read more about on this website here.
